Experiential learning is a vital component of planning education. Over the past term, I have designed, led and participated the following field trips for our Scottish Level 7 (Year 1) and Level 9 (Year 3) undergraduate students, as part of our Work-Based Learning BSc (Honours) in Town Planning programme.

2 Paisley Local Fieldtrips

3 Fieldtrips at Glasgow City Centre

1 Fieldtrip at Glasgow Southside

1 Fieldtrip at Glasgow Hamiltonhill

On 25 September I took part in this fieldtrip to Hamilton Claypits in Glasgow organised by my colleague Sarah Crowe for the Green and Blude Space Design class to learn all about the multiple benefits of blue and green spaces in the city.

In our 26 September Paisley Local Plan Fieldtrip, the Introduction to Planning & Policy students explore the 3 strategic areas according to Paisley Town Centre Action Plan 2016-2026. Here are some sketches made by our students and our group photo in front of Witherspoon statue. We also explored the Sma' Shot Cottages - a social history museum of the weavers' family in the 19th century with an unexpected free tour from a previous Renfrewshire councillor.

In our 3 October Paisley Local Economic Activity fieldtrip, the Applied Urban and Environmental Economics students explore the Paisley Tread and Mill museum together and mapped the economic activities of Paisley High Street, St Mirren Street, and Moss Street.

In our 6 October Glasgow Mural Trial fieldtrip, the Introduction to Planning and Policy students self-initiated a route to study the place-making of Glasgow City's flagship art project despite the heavy rainfall.

On 29 October 2025, the Applied Urban and Environmental Economics cohort conduct a fieldtrip at Glasgow City Chambers and the new development site of Barclay's Glasgow Campus:

On 7 November 2025, we had a most adventuresome fieldtrip in Govanhill at Glasgow's southside, let by our guest speaker Dr Ionut Cioarta, Lecturer in Social and Public Policy from the University of Glasgow to reveal the social and housing problems of the Roma communities in the Southside:

Those fieldtrip is my first batch of endeavour in implement Patrick Geddes' idea of 'thinking globally, act locally' and I am sure to carry on the work to providing exceptional experiential learning that is tailored for local context and students needs.
